- Learn About FTP and and comment on the "Walkie-Talkie" protocol.
Follow the instructions in the course materials to use WS_FTP to connect to your erin account.
Using FTP in this class
- Use WS_FTP to connect to your erin account. Enter the PUBLIC directory. Create a subdirectory called CS115 by clicking on the MkDir button. This is the directory in which you will place all of your class assignments.
- Create an ASCII text document (ordinary text file) using Notepad. The contents may be anything you wish and do not have to be more than a few lines. Save this file to your diskette. Then copy the file to your Erin server account using WS_FTP. The file must be placed in the CS115 subdirectory of your PUBLIC directory.
- Connect to a distant site on the Internet. Download a web page to a diskette then use ftp to copy that web page to your CS115 directory in your erin account.
- Use your web browser to access that same web page. Does there appear to be something misssing from the web page?
- In this assignment you will "research" the topic of Public Key Cryptography using the Internet. We will discuss the ideas behind Public Key Cryptography in class so that you will have a basic understanding of what you are researching. You will create an ASCII text document explaining this topic and reviewing its usefulness. You will also contrast it to other means of encrypting information; especially the DES (Data Encryption Standard).
Please keep in mind that information on the Internet is generally not certified. By that I mean that anyone can post almost anything they wish on the Internet and that there is no current mechanism in place to assure those reading the posted information that it is valid. The contents of a good encyclopedia, however, is reviewed by recognized professionals in the various disciplines and the encyclopedia has gained a reputation over the years for its accuracy. Libraries and other organizations help screen and recommend books. The Internet is a new and immature medium. However, a wealth of useful information does exist on the Internet and only this communications medium can keep up with the most recent developements.
- Connect to cs-netlab-01.lynchburg.edu using "anonymous ftp"
Download WS-Chat from the anonymous ftp site cs-netlab-01.lynchburg.edu. It is located in the directory called WS_Stuff. Use WS-Chat to set up a chat session with another individual. Note that this program is different from IRC (Internet Relay Chat).
- The Midterm Exam will be given in class. Here is a sample.
- Connect to cs-netlab-01.lynchburg.edu using "anonymous ftp"
Download the HTMLAsst HTML editor for your own use. It is shareware.
We will use this program in class to create web pages.
You may run htmlasst from the labs by clicking on START, then RUN and then typing
\\ntserver1\apps\htmlasst\htmlasst.exe
Because of some problems with running htmlasst from the server you will encounter two error messages. You may ignore these error messages and simply click OK to the error message dialog boxes. The program will still run properly.
- In class we will create an html document that will serve as a reference in our html development. The file, called examples.htm will contain examples of our most frequently used html tags. Please customize the file for yourself outside of class as a homework assignment. For a sample see htmlref.htm
- Visit a campus computer lab and log on under your server account. Next, launch Frontpage 2000 and bring up the web page your created with HTML assistant. We will learn to use Frontpage 2000 in class. You may do future web pages with FrontPage but you must be able to fine-tune them with a basic text editor or HTML editor like Notepad or HTML assistant. I.e., you must understand and know how to use basic HTML tags.
- The Final Exam will be given in class during the regularly scheduled exam time.
