Establish a connection to our Debian Linux installation (castor=161.115.86.154) and run the KDE desktop
- Download X-win32.exe from \\Academic-1\Apps\Xwin32\XWin32.zip using My Computer or Explorer. We have a 25 simultaneous user license for x-win32. There are other freeware X servers such as Xfree386 and VNC you may use.
- Run X-win32 and run X-Util32 the first time you run X-win32. X-Util32 will start automatically when you run X-win32 after the first time.
- Under X-Util32, select Options and set Windows Settings to Single.
- Download puTTY which is a secure shell program (SSH) either from the Internet or from cs-netlab-01.lynchburg.edu/anonymous/Putty
- Run puTTY and log into your account on castor=161.115.86.154. Select the SSH radio button before lgging in.
- After logging in you will need to assign a value to the DISPLAY variable. At your Linux prompt type
export DISPLAY=161.115.xxx.yyy:0.0
where 161.115.xxx.yyy is the IP address of your PC.
- then execute the following command
startkde
to start the kde desktop environment on your PC.
- Now, return to the X-Win32 screen, maximize it, and you should be in the same environment you would have been if you had logged into the Debian Linux console.
Normal connection with KDE desktop
If you have already established your initial connection as described above the connection sequence becomes somewhat simplified as follows.

Log into your account on castor.lynchburg.edu using puTTY in SSH mode.
prompt>export DISPLAY=161.115.xxx.yyy:0.0
where 161.115.xxx.yyy is the IP address of your PC.
prompt>startkde
return to the X-Win32 window
