CS201 Networking Exercise

You are the new network administrator for a small company. You are the only person at the company who knows anything about computers, but that is okay because you know a lot about computers. Your first day on the job you meet with the president of the company who tells you that they had to fire the old IT manager, and in retaliation, the IT manager deleted most of the information about the company networks. However, the president shows you a taunting email he received from the disgruntled IT manager. The source address listed in the e-mail header is disgruntledItManager@smallCompany.com.

1.) You know that the company has an http server. How might you find the IP address for the company www server? What utilities might you use?

2.) You find that the IP address for the company website is 203.175.35.4. What is the class of the company network? What is the network address of the company network? How do you know?

3.) The taunting letter from the IT manager suggests that there may be viruses on all 4 subnets of the network. What is the network mask for each of the company subnets? Approximately how many hosts can be placed on each subnet?

4.) Next you want to determine the number of routers/gateways that are on the system. What is the minimum number of routers/gateways on this system? How might you find the IP address of each one?

5.) How can you find the name of a DNS server that the company network employs?

6.) The president mentions that he would like you to interconnect the local area networks for sales and accounting to the other 4 company subnets. What must be done to accomplish this task?
