Installing Debian

  1. One may Install Knoppix to Hard Disk or
  2. Acquire the Debian CDs and follow the directions. Installing from the proper CD set is preferable.
  3. Before beginning the install determine what type of video card is in your computer and what chipset it is using
  4. and know your monitor screen size, resolution and freq.
  5. If possible, ensure that you are connected to the network when the installation is performed so you can be automatically configured to access the network. If installing using a modem to access the internet you will need to know the modem chipset.
  6. If not using DHCP to acquire a dynamic IP address you should acquire a static IP address from your network manager.
  7. Determine the MAC address of your Network Interface Card.
  8. When partitioning drive create 2 physical partitions, one for boot and one for swap. Create the swap partition first. You will need to change the "Type" of the swap partition to swap.
  9. To toggle between cyrillic and latin alphabet I chose left Windows key.
  10. Samba domain name = lynchburg.edu
  11. During the configuration process select "Use Md5 passwords with shadowing"
  12. To revisit the configuration process run /usr/sbin/bas-config
