Backups - Performing proper backups are an important responsibility of system managers. Backups must be done not only to protect users but often also as a legal requirement such as when payroll or tax records are kept on a computer. Proper backups are dependent upon the needs of a particular installation but most principles hold across installations. Here is an excerpt from an old manual that addresses backup procedures. Although some references in the document are outdated the principles of backing up remain the same.

Creating a Boot Disk is an important backup procedure for both Windows and Unix systems. Whenever you install an operating system make sure you have created an emorgency boot disk in case your main boot device(s) are disabled for whatever reasons. Store the disks where they can be easily located when needed yet are safe.
